Bobbie Oliver

Bobbie Oliver’s work is defined by a deeply physical and intuitive approach to painting. She explores the emotional and material aspects of the medium, paying close attention to the texture, thickness, and transparency of the paint. Her process is guided by an interest in opposites—sharp against soft, dense against washy—creating rich, dynamic relationships between color and form. Influenced by nature and her extensive travels, especially in India, she draws inspiration from the emotional quality of color, particularly the vibrancy of spices and the simplicity of Chinese landscape painting and Japanese calligraphy. Each painting is a fresh beginning, evolving organically without a preconceived plan, resulting in work that is direct, fresh, and full of depth.
Her work has been supported by awards from The Canada Council, The Ontario Arts Council, The New York State Council for the Arts, and the Pollock Krasner Foundation. She has worked with Isamu Noguchi and La Monte Young, and taught at prestigious institutions such as Princeton University and the Rhode Island School of Design.
